John and Shawndell’s Miami Destination Wedding at the Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne

Posted on September 25, 2009

We love all of our clients from New York – and John and Shawndell are no exception! When John called us the first time there was so much noise in the background we asked, “Where are you?” He responded, “New York!” We just smiled. He and his fiancée, Shawndell were planning a true destination wedding at the magnificent Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne and they had fallen in love with my photos. After a few conversations over the course of a few months, John announced that they were hiring me to photograph their big day!

As a seasoned Miami wedding photographer, I deal with many clients who are planning destination weddings here, but this couple was just so excited – I could tell with every phone call just how important this wedding was and especially the photography – this was a key priority for them. In addition to selecting the Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne as their wedding venue, John and Shawndell hired Guerdy Rejouis-Abraira of Divine Designs by Guerdy and Ocean Florists to handle both the flowers for their event as well as all coordination. Guerdy’s attention to detail and talents as a florist render her one of the most sought after wedding planners and florists in South Florida. As always, the Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne did an impeccable job with everything. Inessa was on hand to manager the event from the hotel’s end.

I had a great time photographing John and Shawndell at their South Florida wedding. They were enthusiastic and willing subjects who made my job fun and easy. Many thanks to John, Shawndell and also to Guerdy for a superb wedding at an always amazing venue.

What the Smart Brides Know

Posted on September 18, 2009

Selecting the perfect wedding photographer can be a very tough job. With thousands of photographers out there claiming they are up to the task it is very easy to get confused and be unsure of the best way to go about selecting the right one. As a highly experienced South Florida wedding photographer, I know first hand the nuances and necessities of wedding photography and the pitfalls brides could fall into if not careful when selecting a photographer for their wedding day.
Artistic wedding photography is much more complicated than just grabbing a good camera and taking pictures. While many photographers may call themselves a wedding photographer, wedding photography requires a good eye as well, a certain level of experience, the ability to work with people and the ability to adjust to a changing environment.
You may think you can weed out the good from the bad by meeting the photographer and looking at samples, but what you’ll mostly end up being shown are just the best photographs from the bunch, rather than the whole set. Well, here is one little known fact that all the smart brides know – it’s not just the best photos you need to see, it’s the entire wedding set.
When meeting with wedding photographers, ask to be shown the entire set of photos from the wedding as they, together, form a sample of the photographer’s work rather than just the best five to ten shots. By looking at the complete set you can see whether or not the photographer can consistently produce beautiful and varied images – like black and white wedding photography, portraits, ceremony and the reception shots – with creativity, good angles and lighting. It is by looking at a diverse array of shots from a wedding, and not just the “lucky” shots, that you will be able to discern whether or not the photographer is what you need for your wedding day.
Some photographers will try to pass off their blurred and less than perfect photography as wedding photojournalism or artistic wedding photography, when in reality all it is, is a bad set of shots. While you may be fooled by this claim if you only look at a handful of shots, you won’t be if you look at the entire set. If the entire set of pictures if out of focus, then you really need to continue to look elsewhere for a wedding photographer as no bride wants those kinds of shots to be in her wedding album.
Whether it is portraits, reception shots, candid shots or black and white wedding photography every picture should be one you can proudly show off to your family and friends instead of hiding at the back of your photo albums. Here at Jeff Kolodny Photography, we pride ourselves on being a most reputable South Florida wedding photography studio and we always offer to show prospective clients the entire set of photos from a wedding – either in a physical meeting or online.

Stefanie & Bryan’s South Florida Destination Wedding at the Delray Beach Marriott

Posted on September 18, 2009

Stefanie contacted us one year ago about photographing her South Florida destination wedding. She and her husband, Bryan, live in Philadelphia so they were doing all of their planning from afar. They were an absolute pleasure to deal with, both in their planning phase and on their wedding day. There are so many wonderful venues in South Florida, that I asked Stefanie why she selected the Delray Beach Marriott – what made it stand apart? She said that as a regular visitor to Florida, she and her family would always take walks along A1A and found that the Delray Beach Marriott was just as beautiful inside as it was outside.

Having a wedding at the Delray Beach Marriott offered the best for Stefanie and Bryan’s guests. The hotel has a pool plus it is right across the street from a beautiful beach. The area offers many bars, restaurants and places for the bride and groom to “hang” with their friends while everybody was in town for the big day. Chelsea Pierce, Catering Manager at the Delray Beach Marriott, did a wonderful job managing the event details. The band was Music Machines and the MC was Shamar Reyes.

Two of the most important aspects of Stefanie’s wedding were great photography and a great hairdresser! She used the hair and make-up team of Salon Oasis and was very pleased with the results. Another fun fact about their wedding was that Bryan was given a tie by one of his clients (he is a personal trainer) and his brother in law, father and Stefanie’s stepfather were all wearing the same tie. Bryan loved the colors and wanted to incorporate it into his South Florida wedding.

As a South Florida wedding photographer, I have many clients from out of state who call us for help in planning their destination weddings. Stefanie and Bryan were no exception. They contacted me early on in the planning stages for their Palm Beach County wedding. They actually had a different venue altogether when they first called – then they realized the benefits of having a Delray Beach Marriott wedding, so they moved it there.

We had loads of fun shooting Stefanie and Bryan’s destination wedding! They were the nicest people and very enthusiastic about taking photos! They gave me plenty of opportunity to be creative and do what I love to do. Many thanks to Stefanie, Bryan and Chelsea Pierce for an absolutely flawless event and an amazing venue.

Wow - look at those ties!!

Everybody had such a great time!

Chris and Erin’s Palm Beach Destination Wedding at The Breakers

Posted on September 3, 2009

Erin and Chris live in New York City, but planned a magnificent destination wedding at The Breakers in Palm Beach. It was not only a destination wedding for them, but every single one of their guests also traveled to this elegant event. Most guests traveled from Chicago (Erin’s home town), Boston (Chris’s home town) and New York (where they currently live). The bride and groom said that since the guests all hailed from colder climates, they were very excited to come to a South Florida wedding and catch some sunshine as well!

As a South Florida wedding photographer, I see many destination weddings, but this one really played up the “Florida” feel with a lemon/citrus theme. The bridesmaids wore different lemon colored dresses by Melissa Sweet and the flower arrangements were created with yellow tulips, calla lilies. The centerpieces for the cocktail hour were mini lemon trees. There was even a signature drink – a lemon flavored martini!

This wedding was quite a family affair! Both the bride and groom come from large families (5 kids each!), so all of their siblings were in the wedding party along with several close friends. Erin’s 3 adorable nephews were the ring bearers.

Erin looked radiant in an Amsale gown and Stuart Weitzman shoes. Chris and Erin brought in an entire 15 piece band from New York. The Eturnity Band made their first appearance at The Breakers and were an absolute hit! Every detail of this wedding was planned beautifully and Kym Bichon of Weddings by The Breakers was instrumental in pulling it all off without a hitch.

As a Palm Beach wedding Photographer, I had a wonderful time photographing this wedding and Erin and Chris were terrific subjects! I photograph many destination weddings at The Breakers and each one is very different and very special. Many thanks to Erin and Chris and to Kym for an amazing evening!

Ceremony at St. Ann's Catholic Church in West Palm Beach.

What an amazing menu!

These desserts were a special feature at Chris and Erin's wedding.
